25 years ago Jordan recognized Ukraine’s independence

MMANNEWSPAPER - December 28 is a remarkable, historical day. On this day, 25 years ago, in 1991, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan recognized Ukraine as an independent country after the collapse of the USSR.

During this period Ukraine and Jordan singed 27 agreements, memorandums and programs.

In the period of the existence of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Jordan the two sides have exchanged over 50 bilateral visits, majority of which were official and working visits of Ukrainian delegations to Jordan.

A significant impulse for the development of the bilateral relations in various spheres was provided by the first official visit to Jordan of the Ukrainian President L.Kuchma in April 2002 as well as first official visit to Ukraine of the King of Jordan Abdullah II in June 2011.

Very important event in bilateral relations was in March 2014, when Jordan, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, voted in favour the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 68/262 «Territorial integrity of Ukraine». And Ukrainians will always remember this very essential and strong support of Jordan.

In 2016 Ukraine and Jordan deep cooperate in political, economic, cultural, tourism and other spheres.

Political relations

On the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Independence of Ukraine Mayor of Amman Mr. Akel Biltaji paid working visit to Ukraine in August 2016. He met with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. Pavlo Klimkin. During the meeting Ukrainian minister presented to the Mayor of Amman the Order "For Merit" of the second degree with which Mr. A.Biltaji was awarded for his significant contribution to the strengthening of bilateral relations and promoting the Ukrainian cultural heritage in Jordan. Also Mayor of Amman A.Biltaji held talks with Mayor of Kiev Vitali Klitschko on ways to bolster ties between the two cities.

In September deputies of Ukrainian Parliament, members of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mr. Vladyslav Golub and Ms. Olena Sotnyk arrived in Jordan as members of Ad Hoc Committee for the observation of the parliamentary elections.

Economic cooperation

In 2016 turnover between Ukraine and Jordan increased. According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine trade of goods between two states grows up by 30.5% and reached 129,5 million US dollars during the 1st ten months 2016, compared with the same period of 2015.

In the first ten months Ukrainian export amounted 122,743 million US dollars and increased by 28,6% compared with the same period of 2015. Import of Jordanian goods increased by 81,1% and amounted 6,663 million US dollars.

Ukrainian export consists of ferrous metals, agricultural products, fats and oils, meat, dairy products and wood. Ukraine imports from Jordan pharmaceutical products (56% of Jordanian export to Ukraine).

Tourism cooperation

In February Ukrainian journalist delegation visited Jordan and met with Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan H.E. Nayef Hmeidi Al-Fayez. He informed about the tourism industry of the Kingdom, its attractiveness and potential. Ukrainian group also visited Aqaba, Perta, Wadi Rum, Baptism Site and Dead Sea. After retuning to Ukraine journalists published many articles and reportages.

On October 22, 2016 First charter flight from Kiev arrived in Aqaba. Some 167 passengers arrived in Aqaba on the first charter flight from Ukraine under a new agreement to boost tourism. Under the agreement, signed by Jordan Experience and the Ukraine’s Feerie Travel, weekly charter flights will be operated from Kiev to Aqaba’s King Hussein International Airport until January 2017, and from March until November 2017.

 Cultural cooperation

In the second half of March 2014 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Great poet Greater Amman Municipality renamed street to Taras Shevchenko. It should be noted that Jordan has become the first among 22 Arab countries, where T.Shevchenko Street appeared and the Embassy of Ukraine in Amman has become the first Ukrainian foreign diplomatic mission in the world which is located on the street named after the Great Kobzar.

On March 9, 2015 on the occasion of the 201st anniversary of Taras Shevchenko birth, H.E. Ambassador of Ukraine in Jordan Sergiy Pasko and H.E. Mayor of Amman Akel Biltadji opened Park of Ukrainian-Jordanian Friendship, which is located next to the Great Poet street.

In December 2014 Memorial plague was set in honor of Taras Shevchenko in Amman. On the Memorial plaque (size 100x60 cm) there are a portrait of the Great Ukrainian Kobzar and inscription in Arabic, Ukrainian and English: «This street is named after Taras Shevchenko - the great Ukrainian poet and artist to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth. The decision was issued by Great Amman Municipality in March 2014».

In 2015 and 2016 Ambassador of Ukraine H.E. Sergiy Pasko, Mayor of Amman H.E. Akel Biltadji, Ukrainian community, Jordanian citizens planted around 250 trees in the Park. In 2017 Ukrainian Embassy is planning to plant around 1000 trees, which will be delivered from Kyiv.

On the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence Embassy of Ukraine in cooperation with Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan organized performance of Academic ensemble of folk instruments from Ternopil Philharmonic Hall «Veseli Halychany» at the ancient Roman Theatre in Amman. Also this group performed in Jerash, Madaba and Dead Sea.

In 2016 Ukrainian designers held (on May, August and December) four fashion shows (two in Amman, one in Aqaba and one at the Dead Sea). They presented collections of modern dresses.

In December Embassy organized two art exhibitions of Ukrainian living genius, Mr. Ivan Marchuk and Ms. Halyna Popinova – who is representative of Popinov art dynasty.
